Iryna Kuchma, EIFL Open Access Programme Manager, will speak at the training session on Open Research in Practice: Data Management, Sharing, Transparency and New Models of Scholarly Communication, hosted by the Southern African Research and Innovation Management Association’s Research Output, Outcomes and Impact Community of Practice.

Reports from projects aiming to strengthen the quality and sustainability of African no-fee open access (OA) publishing are continuing to come in, and we take pleasure in sharing results from three projects, in Mozambique, Nigeria and South Africa.

EIFL’s comments to the European Commission's Call for Evidence supporting a review of the 2019 Copyright in the Digital Single Market (DSM) Directive focus on two specific areas: facilitating research and sharing the results of publicly-funded research.

EIFL will host a working session on Financial sustainability planning for eight grantees of the ‘Collaboration for sustainable open access publishing in Africa’ project. The grantees are publishing 14 no-fee (Diamond) Open Access (OA) journals and are developing financial sustainability strategies and action plans for their journals. 

Join the EIFL online meet-up of open science trainers, where Jonathan England, OpenAIRE’s Open Science Training Specialist, will explore accessibility in open science training and share practical approaches to designing more inclusive learning experiences. The presentation will be followed by a discussion on how institutions strategically plan open science training.  

Public librarians in Africa are invited to an online capacity-building event focused on community needs assessment as the key to developing a successful library service or programme. 

Milica Ševkušić, EIFL Open Access Programme Project Coordinator, will facilitate the workshop, ‘Science Without Borders: Why Do We Need an Open Scholarly Infrastructure?’, organized in collaboration with the Serbian Reproducibility Network and the Open Science Community Serbia as a satellite ahead of the Application of Free Software and Open Hardware (PSSOH) conference.

Iryna Kuchma, EIFL Open Access Programme Manager, will speak at the Open Journal Systems (OJS) training session for editors and reviewers of the Revue Ecosystèmes et Paysages. 

Ramune Petuchovaite, Manager of the EIFL Public Library Innovation Programme (EIFL-PLIP), will participate in satellite meetings and the main conference of the 2026 International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) World Library and Information Congress (WLIC). The Congress is themed ‘Libraries Powering Transformation’. 

EIFL has renewed its read & publish agreement with the European Respiratory Society. The agreement is open to libraries and authors from 36 EIFL partner countries.

From January 2027 to December 2029, the agreement will cover free and discounted read & publish prices for access to and publishing in its flagship journal, the European Respiratory Journal, and three other journals.

Join the second EIFL webinar to discuss experiences of optimizing journal processes and workflows. Guest speaker Tesfaye Gebeyehu from Jimma University in Ethiopia will talk about enhanced initial manuscript screening procedures for their journals, and how managing and language editors and an assistant have helped to reduce editorial bottlenecks and strengthen coordination among editors, reviewers, and authors.

Editors of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) open access (OA) journals are invited to join this webinar on current journal policies and practices for evaluating unreviewed and peer-reviewed manuscripts that are already available on preprint servers or in open repositories. 

The webinar is organized by the OPERAS Best Practices Special Interest Group, and will be facilitated by Iryna Kuchma, EIFL Open Access Programme Manager. 

Iryna Kuchma, EIFL Open Access Programme Manager, is one of the Open Repositories 2026 Host Committee Members and will chair sessions at the Open Repositories 2026 online conference. The theme for the conference is 'Open to All? Repositories at the Intersection of People, Practice, and Emerging Technologies'. 

Conference presentations and recordings will be available here. 

The webinar will introduce key video creation techniques, including working with the timeline, adding and editing visual and audio elements, applying animations and transitions, and recording screen content. Participants will also learn about final editing processes and exporting videos for use across different platforms. The webinar will make use of the online video creation tools, Canva and Clipchamp. 

It is intended for librarians and trainers involved in developing learning materials.

Iryna Kuchma, EIFL Open Access Programme Manager, will speak about no-fee open access publishing in Africa at the Higher Education Leadership Programme (HERizon) of the Southern African Regional Universities Association (SARUA). 

SARUA HERizon is an online initiative that aims to build leaders in higher education institutions in SADC (Southern African Development Community) countries, the broader African region and beyond.

Britt-Marie Wideberg, Manager of the EIFL Licensing Programme, analyzes the amount of research published in open access in 2025 by authors from EIFL partner countries to find out how EIFL-negotiated open access agreements are making a difference.  

WIPO’s Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR/48) met in Geneva from 18 - 22 May 2026. Teresa Hackett, EIFL Copyright and Libraries Programme Manager, joined members of the Access to Knowledge (A2K) Coalition at SCCR/48 and reports on an important breakthrough on limitations and exceptions.
